A war song (shellela).
In Ethiopian tradition, warriors entered the fray of battle shouting the name of their commander’s horse. This name was always made up of the noun “Abba”, (Father), followed by a word connected to some quality of the leader; for instance, Atse Tewodros’ horse name was Abba Tatek (Get Ready), while Menelik’s was Abba Dagnew (Judge). This song echoes the ancient tradition: it re- counts the deeds of heroes, evoking them through their horse name.
Atse Tewodros Project is a world music group, a mix of Ethiopian traditional and modern instruments the group presents a unique and interesting sound based on traditional Ethiopian pentatonic scales.
